Stop B.S., Live on "Education Today"

Kitty Kelly Epstein, Host of "Education Today" on KPFA Pacifica Radio, recently interviewed me about the Stop Bullying System and our upcoming events.

In the interview she noted the significance of my own educational experience and ways I moved through the education system and am now creating positive change.  She also stated she is thrilled to know that there are beginning to be active School Board Presidents who really understand children.  Here are the highlights of the discussion about Preventing Bullying in Schools.

How bullying happens and what needs to be done about it.  The problem is so much more extensive than people thought.

The Issue of Bullying is another way of talking about Violence.
We focus on Violence and Peace Building.

The new element that is bringing bullying to the forefront is the proliferation of Bystanders and the Ugly use of Digital Technology and The Internet to make bullying spread faster and farther than it has in the past.

When No one intervenes the situations get so out of control that they end up being in the media and causing serious problems for families and communities.  Sometimes the end result is suicide.  This needs to stop.

Are we fighting an uphill battle?

Could be,  but through our observation of youth in the San Francisco Bay Area and many School Districts around the country most young people are doing the right thing.  3/4 of young people are on task and on the right track to provide a positive future for themselves.  Then there's that 25% that the media is always highlighting, we always hear about the issues, challenges, and struggles.

When we go to schools and communities and start asking questions and creating dialogue around Peace Building, the young people are ready for it, and take over the conversation themselves.  They come up with all the ideas and ways that they can have a more safe and welcoming environment in their schools and in their  communities.

Youth don't want to be in a place that they think doesn't feel safe for them or anyone else.  So the students are our allies.

Young people have lots of issues and challenges.  It's our experience when doing Youth Work, and Social Justice Work, and asking youth about what their main concerns are, Violence is usually at the top of the list.  Our teens have many ideas and are ready to strategize with caring adults to create an atmosphere of Peace and Productivity.  Academic as well as social support helps them thrive at school.  They feel like mentors are as important as tutors are to their future success.  Adults and youth together carry the responsibility of fostering Peace in our schools and communities.

Bullies Tear Down, Friends Build Up

The entire Stop Bullying System team thanks Mills Peninsula Health Services and in particular, the wonderful folks in the African American Community Health Advisory Committee.  It is one thing to believe we have a special gift or talent but it is empowering to know that someone else values our programs and services.

We are happily striving to do what the advisory committee's motto says: "sharing knowledge for life."
Knowledge is the Foundation of Life.  From knowledge we gain wisdom and understanding.  So it is a great day when we all come together and share our knowledge and experience in order to understand the dynamics of Bullying.

Knowledge for the sake of knowledge may become useless.  The Stop Bullying System promotes sharing  knowledge for the purpose of Prevention and Problem Solving.

We will collectively explore and process the following:

Bullying, what is it? Who bullies? Why?  What do they tear down?

What is a friend?  How do they build up?

The day will be informative and interactive.

Shakeel Ali,

Here is more information about the event:

Everyone plays an important role in ensuring all children are safe from bullying – including young people themselves, but not everyone knows how. To help people learn coping techniques and strategies to overcome and end bullying of all kinds, the  African American Community Health Advisory Committee (AACHAC) in partnership with Mills-Peninsula Health Services, is sponsoring a half-day, anti-bullying workshop for youth, teens and parents called, “Bullies Tear Down, Friends Build Up!”
The free community workshop will be held on Saturday, March 30, 2013, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at  Mills Health Center’s Hendrickson Auditorium at 100 S. San Mateo Drive in San Mateo, Calif.

Workshop Topics Include:

• Race-related Bullying

• Sexual Orientation Bullying

• Relationship Abuse

“The AACHAC is committed to hearing the voices in our community,” said Shaunda Scruggs of the AACHAC.  “In the past few years, the topic of bullying has come up again and again, so we felt it necessary to meet the need. This interactive program will instruct youth and their parents, and share the resources available in the community.”

The keynote speaker is Shakeel Ali. Ali is the creator of theStop Bullying System Program, co-founder of Ask Academy(Alternative School of Knowledge Academy), and president of the Governing Board of Education for the Jefferson Elementary School District. He has also been a national trainer with Ripple Effects, an anti-bulling youth training effort.

Admission to this event is free. For more information, emailinfo@aachac.org or call 650-696-4378. To register, visit the AACHACwebsite: www.aachac.org.

Peace Building Tools. "Think Hip."

3/12/2013

When it comes to Peace Building, many students and teachers are looking for simple but effective tools that can be used right away. Thankfully, while coordinating the "Help Increase The Peace" Initiative, we gained this tool called "Think Hip"

It can be printed out and kept in a pocket or folder. Or you can bookmark this page and refer back to it when needed.

The next time you are involved with a conflict or disagreement you can choose to Think about a peaceful way to handle it. This tool will help you generate ideas.

Of course just as with any tool, there are techniques that make the tool more effective. One way we use "Think Hip" is by telling stories about a time we had to use one of the suggestions on the list.

What are some of your ideas on how to use this tool?
